Kidderminster’s Paralympic swimmer, Claire Cashmore, has received an extra special Christmas gift this year – a brand new car from Hills Ford.
Keen to help keep Claire afloat financially as she juggles studying towards a Linguistics Degree at Leeds University and training to take part in the 2012 Olympic Games, the Kidderminster dealership has loaned Claire a brand new Ford Fiesta Edge 1.4 petrol automatic.
The stylish and sophisticated Fiesta will effortlessly carry Claire between her competitions fuel efficiently (over 43mpg!) whilst keeping her safe and secure with the driver, passenger and side air bags. Claire’s driving experience will be further enhanced with the help of the electronic power assisted steering and her safety ensured with the Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) with Traction Assist and Emergency Brake Assist.
Hills Ford is also taking care of the car’s servicing requirements for the next two years as well as covering the cost of the insurance for Claire.
Born without her left forearm, Claire has already clocked up an impressive list of swimming medals. At the age of 16, she was the youngest member of the GB swimming squad at the 2004 Paralympic Games where she scooped a bronze medal double. The same year, she won the BBC Midlands Young Disabled Sports Person of the Year Award.
At the Beijing Paralympics in 2008, Claire won another bronze, followed by a silver medal and a new British record at the 2008 Visa Paralympic World Cup. At the 2009 IPC European Championships, Claire helped her team win a gold medal and break the world record in the 4×100m medley relay, topping that off with two more bronze medals in her individual events. During the 2009 season, Claire also broke the European 200m Individual Medley record and won two gold and two silver medals at the World Short-Course Championships in Rio.
This year has seen Claire add more medals to her collection – a gold and a bronze at the Short Course Championships in Llandudno, and a hat-trick of silvers at the World Championships in Eindhoven.
Richard Hill, joint managing director at Hills Ford said: “As a local girl who is a fantastic role model, an inspiration to all, and a great ambassador for our country, we really wanted to show our support. We appreciate that Claire is funding her way through university as well as paying to travel to training sessions and swimming events and we hope this will go some way to helping ease the burden. We’ll be keeping an eye on her progress over the next year or so and wish her all the best in the Paralympics.”
Claire commented: “I am over the moon to receive such a generous offer from Hills Ford and really grateful for their support. It makes a great difference to have a reliable car for the early morning training sessions, as well as for the varying meets I have to attend around the country. The support of Hills Ford is really appreciated and will hopefully drive me on to greater things.”
